BenjaminFranklinfoundedAmerica’sfirstlendinglibraryinPhiladelphiain1731.Andthenumberofpubliclibrariesgreatlyincreasedinthelate1800s.AndrewCarnegie,abusinessman,gaveawaymillionsofdollarstohelpbuildfreepubliclibrariesacrossthecountry.Between1886and1919,Carnegiehelpedbuild1,679newlibraries!
