Schopenhauer'smostinfluentialwork,TheWorldasWillandRepresentation,claimedthattheworldisfundamentallywhatwerecognizeinourselvesasourwill.Hisanalysisofwillledhimtotheconclusionthatemotional,physical,andsexualdesirescanneverbefulfilled.Consequently,heeloquentlydescribedalifestyleofnegatingdesires,similartotheasceticteachingsofVedantaandtheDesertFathersofearlyChristianity.[2]
